In 1968, when he was just 14, KENNY HADLEY heard Buddy Rich's band at Lennie's-on-the-Turnpike in Peabody, MA, then caught Duke Ellington at The Boston Globe Jazz Festival. "Johnny Hodges was there, Cat Anderson, Cootie Williams - I was just blown away," he says. "It was the tail end of that era. I got to see Woody's band quite a bit; I saw Basie ten, fifteen times. I saw Kenton, Maynard." After a youthful stint as a rock drummer, Hadley, then 23, formed his first big band. Against all financial and practical odds he's kept it going ever since, drawing upon 45 or 50 local players. As of January 1995, when this album was recorded, he could point proudly to a scheduled appearance at the 1995 Globe Festival (on the bill with the Basie band), a growing roster of concerts and college dates, a successful debut album ("Come Suday"), and a continuing run of Sundays at Pat Flanagan's in Quincy, MA. "I don't pretend I'm blazing trails or anything," he says, "But that's not what I wanted to do anyway. I've always wanted to lead a straight-ahead, swinging big band."
